Can What I Eat Help My Smile
The simple answer is yes. Certain foods increase saliva production which helps wash food off your teeth and neutralizes acids which can erode tooth enamel and cause decay.
Onions, leafy greens, green tea, and peppers help you maintain healthy gums. Healthy gums keep your teeth secure and protect your jaw bones. These foods neutralize oral bacteria, contain vitamins and minerals that boost production of red blood cells, and reduce inflammation. Besides being good for overall health, they also help prevent gum disease.
Celery, carrots, and apples are crunchy and help dislodge any plaque stuck to your teeth. Crunchy fruits and vegetables are high in fiber, take longer to chew, and generate more tooth “washing” saliva. Their high water content helps dilute their natural sugars.
Cheese, meat, nuts and milk contain high levels of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that help keep your tooth enamel strong and strengthen bone. These minerals are also good for your gums. Dairy also neutralizes oral acids that are produced by mouth bacteria.
Green tea is chock full of antioxidants that can reduce inflammation in the gums and elsewhere in your body. Plain green tea may not have much taste, but adding a tiny bit of 100% fruit juice or some lemon with a bit of stevia sugar substitute can make a very tasty cup of tea.
Many of us can’t give up our sweet tastes, but using sugar or chemical sugar substitutes may cause more harm than good. Stevia and erythritol, made from plants, provide a sweet taste without the harm that may be caused by sugar and artificial sweeteners.
For the healthiest smile, teeth, gums, and overall healthy body, stick to fresh foods without any processing or additives. You will keep that beautiful smile.
