Dos and Don’ts for Keeping Teeth Sparkling After Whitening
Dos
Do practice oral hygiene before whitening. Visit your dentist for a cleaning and exam and brush and floss regularly before your appointment. Schedule your 6-months dental checkup and cleaning right before you plan on the whitening procedure.
Do drink coffee and tea through a straw so less liquid hits your enamel. Brush, floss, and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash to minimize plaque buildup. Plaque is sticky and staining foods cling to plaque.
Do check with your physician if you are on medications that stain teeth. Sometimes a different medication can be prescribed.
Don’ts
Don’t eat or drink staining foods the first few days after whitening. Don’t smoke. Brush less frequently. Wait a few days before eating staining foods like tomatoes, tomato sauce, grape juice, or red and purple fruit.
Don’t drink carbonated beverages (i.e., soda) which break down enamel on your teeth and make them more porous. Soda and carbonated drinks are very acidic as are grapefruit juice, tomato juice and lemonade. If you can’t avoid these acidic foods, brush your teeth immediately after ingesting them.
Don’t forget to tell your dentist if you are allergic to peroxide, a common product used in tooth whitening products. Tooth whitening can cause a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and mild irritation of the soft tissues. Don’t hesitate to let your dentist know if these issues last more than a few days.
