Overcoming Fear of Going to the Dentist
There are many reasons that people dread going to the dentist. It could be an actual fear or anxiety from any number of reasons like a previous bad experience, fear of needles used to numb areas being worked on, or simply anxiety from being out of control in the treatment chair. Dentists take these fears seriously and will work with you to alleviate your personal reasons for anxiety about treatment.
It is important to your dental and overall health that you find a dentist you are comfortable with and many things can influence how you feel including the office environment, how friendly the staff is, and the dentist him or herself. The easiest way to “shop around” is to visit the office and ask questions, then when you find one that you feel more comfortable with, you can ask for a consultation to discuss your particular situation. The dentist will work with you to make you as comfortable as possible.
Regular twice-yearly cleanings are very important to the health of your mouth and teeth, but also to the health of your whole body. Infections or decay in your mouth can migrate to other parts of your body. The state of your mouth can also telegraph to the dentist that other areas in the body may be at risk or causing trouble.
When they know you have anxiety over dental treatment, most dentists will gently explain what procedures are being done and ask your permission to continue. If fact, they usually do this for all their patients. You will be given the opportunity to stop the procedure at any time you feel uncomfortable simply by raising your hand. The dentist will be happy to explain anything you don’t understand.
Very few people look forward to going to the dentist, but when you find one like Dr. Thomas, you will go for your cleanings and checkups with less anxiety. Don’t let a shortage of money or lack of insurance prevent you from getting the health-giving cleanings, and treatments you need. Dr. Thomas is happy to work with you to find an affordable way to pay for your treatment.
